April in South Central Alaska brings the long-awaited “break-up” season. Lengthening Spring days and warming temperatures beckon in Summer. For the famed fishing town of Cooper Landing, AK, April ignites newfound traffic. The warming temperatures offer an opportunity for motorists and anglers alike. The world-class Kenai River that runs along Cooper Landing, champions a healthy population of resident Rainbow Trout. Catch-and-release anglers may fish through the end of April, a nice interlude between hardwater ice fishing and the busy salmon seasons.

If you are passing through Cooper Landing consider stopping at Wildman’s !

Wildman’s is one of those iconic road stops. Restrooms, a convenience store, gifts, food and ice cream all await here!

After a well spent April Saturday fishing the Kenai River for rainbow trout, I elected to make the stop. Inside you will find the usuals of a small town convenience store. Additionally, you will find a dining area, where locals and travelers alike are welcomed.

At first glance I was torn between hard serve, soft serve, or a specialty milkshake. I determined I would wait to see what others before me ordered. The first woman in line went for a kid-sized soft serve twist! Seeing the creamy wonder and size of the kid-portion, her partner folded and went for the same.

When it was my turn to order my mind was made up. I order an adult-sized waffle cone soft serve twist with rainbow sprinkles. The staff were quick and friendly! I walked out with the first soft serve cone of Spring in hand. Tasting it, I knew it would not be the last I tried from Wildman’s. It was true soft-serve, creamy and flavorful; unlike the numerous icy soft serve attempts I’ve seen elsewhere.

I look forward to trying the rest of Wildman’s menu! Next time you are in Cooper Landing, AK be sure to make the stop!
